Implementing a pan-European system at NEC

NEC Electronics (Europe) GmbH is a leading developer, manufacturer and supplier of semiconductor products across Europe. The company employs over 500 people, most of whom are based in Germany, France and the United Kingdom.

At NEC’s offices in Milton Keynes, HR Manager Alan May has been heavily involved in the development of a performance management system within NEC. This is linked with a new approach to job evaluation which uses eight different factors to assess job roles, as well as revising the company’s method for grading salaries.

“We had a situation where different systems were being used in different countries, which is a classic problem in a fast growing multi-national,” said Alan. “Having made the decision to get a higher level of consistency across our HR systems, we found ourselves facing an impossible task – to match competencies to job factors and put the results together, in booklet format, in just eight weeks. Achieving this in-house was not an option, so we decided to pull in external support. Human Resource Solutions, with whom I’d worked in the past, have a very detailed understanding of competencies and an excellent track record when it comes to delivery. With input from HRS the outcome has been even better than we’d hoped: the deadline achieved, and a 95% ‘hit rate’. Given that there have been a number of cultural issues in implementing a pan-European system, a sensitive approach was vital. Buy-in has been very impressive and we’re still getting positive feedback about the clarity of the product several months after the initial launch phase at the beginning of this year.”
